Modernising PicoPass Estates - Approach Paper

Access control systems are a core part of how organisations secure and control access to their premises. HID has confirmed the retirement of the entire PicoPass technology stack - including cards, couplers, and reader components.

The key milestones are:

  • End of Development: June 2024

  • End of Sale: June 2027

  • End of Support: July 2028

While many systems will continue to operate for some time, these dates signal a gradual reduction in hardware availability, support options, and long-term resilience. Over time, resolving failures or expanding estates will become increasingly challenging.

For organisations operating AC2000 or similar access control platforms, this change is more than a card refresh. A successful transition requires understanding how readers, credentials, third-party systems, and live operations interact — and sequencing change carefully to maintain continuity and compliance.

To support this, we’ve set out:

  • What PicoPass end-of-life practically means for complex estates

  • The key questions security, IT, and operations leaders should be asking now

  • The options available, along with common risks and considerations

Our latest insight provides a clear, structured view of how to approach this transition in a controlled and manageable way. Download the paper below.
